Over the weekend Delhi Capitalsand Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Indian players and support staff were the last teams to have arrived in Dubai, completing the list of eight franchises in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) in UAE. The long-halted cash-rich tournament, postponed in March and April, is set to commence on September 19 in three venues in UAE – Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

Earlier, the Hyderabad-based franchise landed in the city first, and was soon followed by the team from the Indian capital. Each of the eight franchises will be based at different hotels, with six plus the IPL officials based in Dubai and two in Abu Dhabi. They will have to quarantine in their hotel rooms, during which time they will undergo three coronavirus tests. There will be follow up tests every five days.

In line with the Standard Operating Procedure issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), players will be undergoing mandatory six-day quarantine and RT-PCR tests will be performed on everyone on Day 1, 3 and 6 respectively. Following the tests, players who return negative for all the will be entering the tournament bio-bubble to play the game.

Meanwhile, inside the confinement zone, each player is not allowed to use common dining areas and can only order the food in the menu placed outside their rooms. Housekeeping staff entering the rooms have been told to keep contact to the minimum and the room service staff are not allowed interact with the players. The food they ordered will be placed outside the room and the staff will knock and leave.

“Additionally, we’ve set up a Covid-19 taskforce that will act as a response team for all queries and for any action to be taken during the tournament. This team is led by Anuja Dalvi, who has international experience in cricket and other sports, supported by team physio John Gloster and team Doctor Rob Young,” RR COO Jake Lush McCrum says.

The IPL is more or less 3 weeks away at the time of writing. However, the BCCI is yet to release the official list of fixtures. “We know it is getting delayed but teams are taking stock of everything including recee of the venues. Stay assured schedules will be released before the end of this week”, said Brijesh Patel, IPL Governing Council Chairman.
