In a letter to the State bodies this week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has stated that the group stage of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which is scheduled to take place from January 10 to 31, will be played across six venues. Shah has earlier confirmed through an email accessed by press that the said tournament is set to commence domestic season in India.  

Mumbai, Kolkata, Vadodara, Chennai, Bengaluru and Indore are set to host the league stage of the tournament in a bio-secure bubble. The 38 teams have been divided into five Elite groups of A, B, C, D and E. The eight new state teams like Chandigarh, Bihar and outfits from the NorthEast will be a part of the Plate group. Chennai will host the plate teams, Bengaluru will host Elite ‘A’ teams,

Meanwhile Kolkata will host the Elite ‘B’ group teams. Vadodara, Indore and Mumbai – will host the Elite ‘C’, ‘D’, ‘E ’teams respectively. “As we try our best to navigate (through) these challenging times, we count on you for your active cooperation and support in making this tournament a grand success. The full schedule of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 will be shared in due course,” Shah concluded in his email.”

The newly built Sardar Patel Stadiumin Ahmedabad will host the knockout stage. With the group stage getting over on January 19, the qualified teams will travel to Ahmedabad the next day. This will be the first-ever tournament at the Motera ever since its renovation. The stadium will host a couple of Tests and five T20Is against in February-March

In a communication to the state bodies earlier this month, the BCCI secretary has said that teams will assemble in their respective bio-hubs on January 2 and start preparing for the season. Reports claim that teams will undergo three rounds of Covid-19 tests on January 2, 4 and 6  before they can start training, while here will be two more rounds of testing on January 20 and 22 before the knockouts.
