The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and former India cricket captain Saurav Ganguly was admitted in the hospital last Saturday after suffering a minor cardiac arrest, as confirmed by Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata. He is currently “stable having” undergone angioplasty, his health parameters’ latest update about his condition.

“Sourav Ganguly had a mild heart attack this morning. He came in good time. There was a critical blockage in one artery on which we performed angioplasty,” said Aftab Khan, one of the doctors treating the 48-year-old. Ganguly is kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the care of five-member medical board set up to monitor his health condition.

A coronavirus test was also conducted on Ganguly and he tested negative for it. Rupali Basu, MD and CEO of Woodlands Hospital, said that Mr. Ganguly had an “uneventful night”. She said that Mr. Ganguly’s blood pressure and other parameters were normal. The cricket icon was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries.

“Mr Sourav Ganguly, 48 years old, President BCCI, former Captain of Indian Cricket team and eminent personality suffered from chest discomfort while doing treadmill at his home gym. He had family history of IHD ØE Ischemic heart disease,” said Dr Basu. “He is stable haemodynamically. He has received loading doses of dual antiplatelets and statin and is undergoing primary angioplasty now.”

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhakhar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were among those who visited the hospital. Meanwhile, Cricket Association of Bengal secretary, and Sourav’s elder brother, Snehashis Ganguly also added that his brother was stable. BCCI secretary Jay Shah also expressed his thoughts for the recovery of his superior in a tweet.

Ganguly was unanimously elected president of the BCCI, cricket India’s governing body, in 2019.  He had a superb career prior to entering the administration, captained India to many memorable triumphs. He also played an important part in holding the virus-hit Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the United Arab Emirates last year, won by Mumbai Indians.
