12BET India News: What the pandemic means to international cricket?

For the first time since World War II, the sport played all-year round, cricket, has been halted due to the current global pandemic that have already infected over 350,000 people worldwide and reached 15,00 death toll at the time of writing. Suspending a cricket match can create a ripple effect to the whole season. It only means that suspending a whole season will create a massive impact to the cricket world.

Just early this week, England batsman Alex Hales has reportedly shown symptoms of COVID-19 upon his return to London after taking part in the unfinished Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020. The PSL which was being played behind closed doors was scheduled to host its two semifinals until Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the franchise owners decided “to call off the tournament for the time being”.

If tested positive, Hales is the first cricket star to have infected by the virus. The following tournament and series this year were either called off or currently hanging as the global pandemic remains uncontainable.

Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League (IPL0 is one of the, if not the largest cricket tournament in the word. This cash-rich T20 league is said to generate more than $11 billion a year to the Indian economy. Major sponsor Vivo paid $330 million for 2018-2022 deal. Recently, The Board of Control for Cricket in India has postponed the opening of the games to 17 days. From its original schedule on March 29, the board moved the opening to April 15 due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, there are still doubts of pushing the tournament as the cases in India continue to rise.
