It is the battle of the former friends, as Hardik Pandya returns against his old team when the Gujarat Titans face the Mumbai Indians. While Pandya’s Titans are flying high at the points table, on the top spot, his former team has had one of the worst seasons in their decorated history. This should be a great game of cricket if the Mumba Indians show up.
Will the Titans dispatch the Mumbai side and punch their ticket to the playoffs, or will Mumbai become the party-poopers and crash the Gujarat procession. This has all the makings of a classic with the number of subplots that are there for this game. The fans will be hoping for some brilliant live cricket on display here.
The Titans suffered a setback in their last game, losing to the Punjab kings and seeing their 5-game winning streak end. For once, they looked vulnerable, and that is because they decided to bat first. They never looked in control throughout their innings, and somehow stumbled their way to 144. Even their bowling was not really up to the mark, with Shami on the receiving end of a brutal assault from Liam Livingstone.
However, they will not be that perturbed by that loss, because they still are at the top of the table, and just need one more win to go through to the playoffs. But they will be wary about the vulnerabilities they disclosed in their previous game and will want to improve on those.
And the wait is finally over. The Mumbai Indians finally have a win under their belt. And they achieved that on the back of a complete performance with both bat and ball. Against the Royals, they bowled extremely well and did not allow their batters to set themselves, and with the bat they were equally efficient, timing the chase to perfection and ensuring that they reached the target in spite of a slight wobble towards the end. They will be looking to carry forward this momentum in the remaining games after the weight of having no wins has finally been lifted from their shoulders.
This is the first time these sides are meeting in the IPL.
While the Mumbai Indians will be playing without a chip on their shoulder, with nothing to lose, it is hard to look beyond the Gujarat Titans, who will be the overwhelming favorite for this game.
