Actor Naseeruddin Shah names his favourite current cricketer- not Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli

The film star who starred in a lot of famous movies over the years is also a passionate cricket lover. When asked about his favourite current cricketing personnel, he said he is a fan of ‘Ravichandran Ashwin’ in an interview with Film Companion. Most of fans and celebrities alike will opt for either Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli because they always have the spotlight on them. They have a huge number of fan following on social media platforms and becomes the mode of conversation, whenever the Indian cricket team takes on the pitch. Both of them have created a legacy in Cricket with the Blue shirt. Ask Indian cricket fans who their current favourite cricketer is, and there is a huge chance that most of them will either say Virat Kohli and/or Rohit Sharma.

With both of them dominating, some other big name gets strikeout. However, they also have a sustainable fan-base of their own. Such is the case of Ravichandran Ashwin. The veteran off-spinner has contributed immensely to the national team even though not being in the selection picture at the moment. He took the most number of wickets in test format for India (365) but was also a reliable bowler in the ODIs.

Our latest update: All IPL umpire and referees clear coronavirus tests

Naseeruddin, who is also a director, claims the bowler the one he admires the most from the national camp. He was asked this question on the back of the IPL season set to start on 19th September. The tournament, which is now hosted in UAE due to coronavirus concerns in the country, is in its 13th year of celebrating franchise cricket. The prestigious T20 competition has always been an attraction in the Bollywood industry so often celebrities often have their say on their favourite club or players.

Ashwin will be a part of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the upcoming season with the veteran spinner joining an already glittering bowling sector and specifically the spinners with Amit Mishra and Axar Patel. Both will be crucial in the UAE pitch conditions. Add Ashwin to that and the franchise from the nation’s capital city is set to trouble batsmen in the tournament. Their coach, Ricky Pointing has made a combination of youth and experience in his team and is looking like a deadly combo in IPL 2020. They are gunning for the title or at least the playoff stage.

The veteran actor has been known to make some unpopular comments in recent times. This could possibly be put down as another such one. Ashwin has seen his fair share of critics due to the things that he has done on the pitch.

This is due to the mankading incident in the IPL, that some of the fans just can’t seem to let go of. Recently, Ashwin tried to change his negative image around, in an interview with Ricky Ponting. However, no matter how much he tries, he still is unable to do it.

The fact that MS Dhoni and his moral support from Team India have departed, is hurting him to an extent. The off-spinner has been out of the Indian team, apart from at the Test level. Though that is something that he must be priding himself on, he will want to try his best to impress. At the end of the day, who doesn’t want to play a World Cup?

It will be a big tournament for Ashwin as well, as he is in the twilight of his career. Whether he is able to leave his mark or not, only time will tell. A lot of hopes and expectations of the fans will be on the bowler. He will be playing for the Delhi Capitals this year and have a young side around him.

The team will be looking at him for moments of inspiration in IPL 2020. Hopefully, the veteran can now convert all his experience into a title win, as DC look to impress too.
