BCCI chief claims IPL generates more revenue that EPL
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has claimed the T20 cricket tournament – the Indian Premier League (IPL) makes more money than its football counterpart English Premier League (EPL). “I’ve seen the game evolve, where players like me earned a few hundreds and now have the potential of earning crores. This game is run by the fans, by the people of this country, and by the BCCI, which was formed by cricket fans,” Ganguly said. “The IPL generates more revenue than the English Premier League. It makes me feel happy and proud that the sport I love has evolved to become so strong.”
The cash-rich tournament has become the second most valuable sports league in the world and has made the BCCI as one of the richest governing bodies in the world of global sport. The BCCI treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal said that the governing body earned $533 million from the IPL in 2020. “IPL is the hottest property in cricket and it has just been expanded to a 10-team tournament, which means there will be more matches,” Dhumal told the news agency. “All of it should reflect in the value of the new media rights, which we expect to be significantly higher than our previous deal.”
According to reports, IPL’s per match value currently stands at nearly Rs 104 crore ($13. 4 million), nearly $3 million more than what the English Premier League generates at $11 million. With those figures, IPL now sits behind the NFL, in terms of per match valuation, with the American franchise still on top following its corresponding figure of $17 million (Rs 133 crore per match).
