BCCI set hold an auction for 2 new IPL franchises in May

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to auction two new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises right after the 14th edition of the tournament in May. The new IPL teams will be part of the competition from 2022, as the board plans to expand the cash-rich league into a ten-team affair for its 15th edition. The IPL 2021 is set to commence on April 9 behind closed doors.
The BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah and other board members recently held a meeting to discuss plan of action for the new IPL teams. A senior BCCI source informed about the development to a local news outlet saying that the new additional teams will undergo a bidding process in May right after completing the IPL table in 2021 to know if they can make it next year.
“The 10 team IPL will roll on from next year and the bidding process and finalization of the new franchises will be completed by the month of May this year,” said the source. “Once the teams are finalized, they can start their operational work which takes considerable time.” It is learnt that the BCCI had approved the inclusion of two new IPL franchises in December 2020.

Earlier, reports had suggested that the two new franchises could be one from Ahmedabad and the other from Kanpur. In 2011, the cash-rich tournament has ten teams with Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India played for that particular edition. However, the very next season saw the termination of KTT following their breach of BCCI’s terms and conditions.
The IPL season had 74 matches that year, and it will be interesting to see how IPL 2022 gets scheduled. Meanwhile, IPL 14 is all set to return to India after the thirteenth edition was played in UAE due to the pandemic. However, the Board remains doubtful on the fate of spectators through the whole edition. In a revised format, each team will play at four venues during the league stage.
Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium will host the playoffs as well as the May 30 final, with Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata being the other venues. It will be a 52-day tournament with 60 matches in total. “The fixtures have been mapped in a way that every team will travel only three times during the league stage, thus reducing commute and minimising risk,” Shah said in an earlier statement.
