Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni MS Dhoni is set to become the most-capped player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history as he steps on his 14th match of the on-going season, taking Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai. Dhoni has played 193 matches so far surpassing Suresh Raina’s record of the most capped player. Raina has played 164 matches for CSK already in the IPL.
Raina is back in India due to personal reasons, amid the coronavirus scare, while Dhoni is in UAE leading the CSK like in all seasons that he franchise has appeared in since the inaugural edition. Currently, MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina are tied at 193 matches each in the IPL. MS Dhoni will keep the record at least for this season if CSK make it to the playoffs.
Interestingly, both players have been part of CSK together for a decade. Both the players had joined CSK in 2008. Dhoni, CSK’s costliest pick in IPL 2008 auction, has led the Yellow Army in every IPL game he has played for the franchise. Under him, they have won 100 out of 163 matches. Dhoni has also played for Rising Pune Supergiant, Rising Pune Supergiants in the seasons when CSK were banned from the IPL.
Dhoni returned to CSK after the end of two-year ban period and led them to third title victory in 2018. Dhoni has amassed 4476 runs in his IPL career and is 24 runs away from completing 4500 IPL runs. He is one of the four batsmen with over 200 big hits, with 212 IPL sixes. Dhoni has a strike-rate of 137.89 and has scored 23 half-centuries in the league. He has effected 39 stumpings and has pouched 102 catches.
Meanwhile, Raina, who was also one of the important members of the franchise was fully prepared to play in IPL 2020 and had also joined the one-week training camp held by CSK in Chennai. However, he flew back to Indian and had later said that he might return to the UAE to rejoin the CSK squad
Chennai Super Kings will take on David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Dubai International stadium. They are currently placed at the last spot on the points table as it has only won a single game so far. Raina’s departure affected the Dhoni-led team’s performance in the said to be his worse IPL season following the consecutive defeats.
