But England bowlers did not allow them to explode with the bat. AB de Villiers scored an unbeaten 65. But he was well-tamed by the English pace bowlers on that day. David Willey and Mark Wood were sensational upfront. Chris Jordan was accurate. Liam Dawson’s slow left-arm spinners sowed seeds of doubt in de Villiers.

South Africa need to get their batting right. At the moment their batting is infused with too much self doubt and caution. They need to bat fearless and bat explosively. Against England’s long batting order, they need to score big. The current approach is not at all suited for the purpose. A good thing for South Africa is that de Villiers has shown glimpses of his old form in the previous match. The others also need to come to the party now.
