DC captain Shreyas Iyer likely to miss IPL 2021 after injuring shoulder while fielding

India batsman and Delhi Capitals (DC) captain likely to miss the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 after partially dislocating his left shoulder when fielding in the first ODI against England in Pune. According to reports, Iyer may need at least 6-8 weeks for treatment and recovery from the injury. The cash-rich tournament will commence on April 9 in India.
“Shreyas Iyer subluxated (partially dislocated) his left shoulder in the 8th over while fielding. He has been taken for further scans and won’t take any further part in the game,” said the BCCI in a medical update. “Rohit Sharma was hit on the right elbow while batting and felt some pain later. He won’t take the field.” IPL 2021 schedule will see them taking Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 10.
Iyer acquired the injury in the eighth over of England’s chase, when he dived at extra cover to prevent a boundary. He was pulled out of the rest of the match along with Rohit Sharma, who had been hit on the elbow while batting. Despite these injuries, the first ODI between India and England at Pune ended in a very uplifting win for India. Iyer’s injury, however, was deemed serious and may require scans.

A BCCI sources confirm “he is set to miss not only the rest of the series, but also initial part of Delhi Capitals IPL campaign.” According to sports medical expert, Iyer’s condition “can be fixed in two-three weeks”. However, “if the scans are not good, one requires surgery too, which means two months off,” said the expert as quoted by a news agency.
Under Iyer’s captaincy, the Delhi-based franchise came third in 2019 and reached the final in the cash-rich league’s previous season. He has been one of the most reliable performers in domestic cricket over the years. Following the injury, DC has to look for a replacement in any case Iyer will not be able to lead the team as surgery will take weeks and the IPL will start soon after the ongoing ODI series.
The Shreyas Iyer-led side made a number of recruitments in the IPL auction last month, with Australia’s Steve Smith and England’s duo of Tom Curran and Sam Billings as the most notable players. The franchise also signed India’s Umesh Yadav. Following the injury, options in captaincy will include Smith, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane.
Full squad as follows: Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan, Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Prithvi Shaw, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rishabh Pant, Shikhar Dhawan, Lalit Yadav, Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Woakes, Anrich Nortje, Steve Smith, Umesh Yadav, Ripal Patel, Lukman Hussain Meriwala, M Siddharth, Tom Curran, Sam Billings, Pravin Dubey, Vishnu Vinod.
