Eoin Morgan confirms participation in IPL 2021 return

England white ball skipper Eoin Morgan has confirmed his participation in the remainder of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Morgan, who leads the Kolkata Knight Riders, said that the involvement of other England players will depend on their personal choice. Both the remainder of IPL 2021 and T20 World Cup will be held in UAE. Follow us for more IPL 2021 highlights and IPL live match.

“It’s a complete individual decision. I think it was a win-win either way. If we went to Bangladesh we’d play in conditions that are foreign to us. If some guys go to the IPL, they’ll play in similar conditions or for guys that need a rest, they take a rest. We’ve a lot of cricket to play between now and then,” Morgan said after his London Spirit side’s defeat against Northern Superchargers in the Hundred.

England were due to play three ODIs and three T20Is in Bangladesh in September-October but the ECB and the BCB released statements confirming that they had “mutually decided” to postpone the tour until March 2023. This gave Morgan and the other England players to commit in the remainder of the IPL. Earlier, ECB expressed doubts on letting England players play in the IPL due to schedule constraints.

Morgan had replaced Dinesh Karthik as captain of the KKR during the IPL 2020 they finished fifth and occupied the seventh spot with only two wins before the current season was postponed in May. Last month, the BCCI announced the schedule for the remainder of the IPL 2021 which will be held in the UAE on September 19. A total of 31 matches will be played in the duration of 27 days.

The first Qualifier will be played in Dubai on 10 October, while the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 will be played in Sharjah on 11 and 13 October respectively with Dubai hosting the final on October 15.  At the time the IPL was suspended, there were still 31 matches, including the four playoffs, left to be played. Before the postponement, Delhi Capitals cemented the top spot of the table with 6 wins from 8 games.

The UAE has previously hosted the cash-rich T20 tournament in 2014 and the entire 2020 edition during the first outbreak of COVID-19 in India. Mumbai Indians have successfully defended their IPL title and clinched their fifth trophy after thrashing Delhi Capitals by five wickets in the final in Dubai. Brilliant hostile bowling led by Trent Boult took MI to victory, now the most successful team in IPL history.
