Bayern Munich cruised to the Champions League quarter-finals for the seventh successive year after smashing Besiktas in a 3-1 away victory.
The Reds were already 5-0 ahead during the first leg of the face off. In their second battle, Thiago Alcantara made sure to extend his side’s advantage by striking home 18 minutes after kick off. An own goal from Besiktas Gokhan Gonul immediately doubled Bayern’s lead.
Vagner Love managed to reduce the deficit. He was able to net past goalkeeper Sven Ulreich in the second half.
However, Bayern’s Sandro Wagner capped off the game with a comfortable win over Besiktas with a tap-in.
Despite losing, Besiktas proved to be a strong team at the start of the game but the visitors found an early chance to score when David Alaba’s free-kick was palmed low into the path of Thomas Muller, but he sliced over.
In the post-match interview Bayern captain Thomas Muller said: “In the second half we were not really in control. It was a bit wild, all over the place.
“We lost possession too often, made unnecessary fouls.
“We won 3-1 away from home but somehow that second half did not feel really that good.”
Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes who was pleased with the result said: “It was a convincing result. Besiktas hadn’t lost here in the Champions League, so it wasn’t easy.
“We scored at the right times and it’s normal that we dropped off a little – losing some focus after winning 5-0 is just human.
“The only negative today is that we picked up too many yellow cards.”
