Harbhajan Singh Talks About His Aim With His New Franchise KKR In IPL 2021

Ahead of the IPL 2021, The veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has said that he has nothing left to prove and hence will be enjoying the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought Bhajji for his base price of 2 crores INR in the auction ahead of IPL 2021. He did not play the last season for CSK due to personal reasons, which a lot of other cricket stars cited as well.

He was missed in the previous edition of the competition, as his presence could have given CSK the edge. He can also bat a bit and score some quick runs. It is always exciting to see Harbhajan Singh play some live cricket, as he is one hell of an entertainer. That is something that the IPL stands for and it was missed in the previous edition. Also, he could have been a great mentor to some of the youngsters in the Chennai Super Kings camp.

What Harbhajan told Outlook India in a recent interview about IPL 2021?

KKR will be the third IPL team for which Harbhajan Singh will play. He had played for the Mumbai Indians (MI) from 2008 to 2017. He then played for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2018 and 2019. In a recent interview, the veteran off-spinner expressed his desire to play the game of cricket. He wants to enjoy his time with KKR and play well.

“People think ‘why is he playing’ but that’s your opinion. From where I see myself, I want to play and I will play. I have got nothing to prove to anyone. My intention is to play well, enjoy my stint out there in the middle and playing cricket still gives me that satisfaction.”

Harbhajan Singh wants to enjoy this season of the IPL; could be his last?

Harbhajan Singh has more than 700 wickets in International cricket. However, he has not featured in the Indian jersey since 2016. Bhajji however, has performed well in the IPL in the last few seasons. His performance in IPL 2019 stands out where he scalped 16 wickets in 11 matches. During the interview, Harbhajan talked about his fitness.

“I have set a standard for myself and if I do not meet that, I do not need anyone else but I will blame myself. I need to ask myself, did I put in the optimum effort that was required. Yes, I am not a 20-year-old anymore and won’t be training like I did then. But yes, as a 40-year-old, I know I am fit and will certainly do what is required to succeed at this level.”

Harbhajan will be playing his 23rd season in senior Men’s cricket. He made his international debut in 1998. In the IPL, he has 150 scalps in 160 matches with a bowling average of 7.09 which makes him an asset for any franchise.

Can KKR win the Indian Premier League this season; or will they go down without a fight yet again?

The Kolkata Knight Riders will be eager to win the IPL this time around. They have been winners before and it will be another one to cherish for them. The owners look ambitious and are eager to leave their mark on the tournament before a couple of new teams get added to the mix. It will be interesting to see whether the likes of Harbhajan Singh and co. can deliver for his new team.

Last season, the off-spinner pulled out of the tournament while he was part of the Chennai Super Kings side. He cited personal reasons as the main reason for his decision. Due to that, he was let go off from the squad prior to this auction. With that being said, KKR decided to buy him and add him to their ranks.

It will not be easy for players like Harbhajan Singh who are veterans to do something substantial this time. They will have to fight real hard and make an impression. Whether he can do that or not, remains to be seen. At 40 and retired from international cricket, it will be tough for Bhajji to spin his magic in the upcoming tournament. However, if anyone can do it, it is surely him.
