The Indian Premier League (IPL) is reportedly set to have a dedicated two-and-a-half-month exclusive window from the next Futures Tours and Programme (FTP) of the ICC from 2024. Last month, BCCI secretary revealed that the governing body eyes an extended 10-week window for the succeeding editions of the cash-rich tournament to allow “top international players” to participate in the event.
“A two-and-a-half-month window for the IPL every year, and home-season windows for the Hundred and the BBL respectively in England and Australia’s schedules, affirm the growing primacy of franchise T20 leagues in the international cricket calendar,” the ESPNCricinfo report read. If approved, there will be no international cricket scheduled during that period, while the number of the number of IPL matches could be extended to 94 matches from the current 74. Meanwhile, the Hundred (England) and the Big Bash League (Australia) get their separate home-season windows. The final draft is set to be presented and finalized at the ICC’s annual general meeting on July 25 and 26 at Birmingham.
“We are in discussions with the ICC and several other cricket boards to have an exclusive window for the IPL,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said earlier. “Let me assure you that there will be a two-and-a-half-month window in the next ICC FTP calendar so that all top international players can participate. Since this tournament benefits all, we have received a positive response from the ICC and other member boards.”
Last month, IPL media rights was sold for record-breaking Rs 48,390 crore, becoming the second most prestigious league in the world. In the last edition of the tournament, Lucknow Supergiants and eventual winners Gujarat Titans joined the expanded league. The next edition of the IPL has been scheduled tentatively between 25 March 2023 to 28 May 2023.
