Rohit Sharma ruled out of Edgbaston, Jasprit Bumrah to take over

India captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Edgbaston Test against England after his second COVID19 test returned a positive result. For the first time, Jasprit Bumrah is set to take the lead as Sharma’s replacement, while Rishabh Pant will be his deputy. “Rohit Sharma, Captain, Indian Cricket Team is ruled out of the rescheduled fifth Test against England to be played from Friday,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement. “Rohit underwent a RAT Test on Thursday morning and returned a positive result for COVID-19. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mr Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the upcoming Test and Mr Rishabh Pant as his deputy.”

Last week, the 35-year-old tested positive for COVID on the second day of the warm-up match in Leicester before testing positive still earlier this week. He has been in isolation since then and he underwent two more tests, both which returned positive that led to the decision to rule him out of the squad. Rohit has scored 3,137 runs including eight centuries in 45 Tests since making his debut in 2013.

Bumrah, who was Sharma’s deputy in India’s last Test series against Sri Lanka at home earlier this year, will become the first Indian bowler to captain the national team after Kapil Dev, who won the World Cup for India in 1983. Bumrah is India’s fifth captain in the last six months. His deputy, keeper-batter Pant led India for the first time in the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa.

India will also play three ODIs, three T20Is and as many ODIs on the tour apart from the Test match.
