Sunrisers Hyderabad Announces the Replacement of Mitchell Marsh for IPL 2021

Sunrisers Hyderabad Announces the Replacement of Mitchell Marsh for IPL 2021

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has bought English opener Jason Roy as the replacement of Mitchell Marsh. Marsh has pulled out of IPL 2021 citing personal reasons, which is nothing new due to the current pandemic situation. SRH made this announcement just hours after Mitchell Marsh decided to not be part of the season. Marsh was also out for the major part of IPL 2020, after getting injured at the start of the tournament.

On the other hand, Jason Roy has been in tremendous form with the bat recently. He opened the innings for England in all the five-T20Is against India and registered three scores of above 40. He also opened in the three ODIs against India and scored 46, 55 and 14 respectively. Jason Roy will want to work on his overall IPL rank 2021, which is not so good so far.

Previously, Roy has played for the Gujarat Lions in IPL 2017 and then for the Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) for a solitary season in 2018. In those two seasons, he could manage to play in only eight games. Since then, he has gone unsold in all the auctions. Due to his poor form back then, he was not really a candidate to be picked by any team. Even in the auction that took place this year, things were not really any different for Jason Roy.

Jason Roy has been in sublime form for England lately

Earlier, Roy expressed his disappointment of going unsold in this year’s auction despite being in sublime form. Roya had an outstanding season for the Perth Scorchers ahead of IPL 2021 auction. However, no franchise still bid for him.

Jason Roy plays for Surrey in County Cricket and has played a total of 235 T20 matches in his career. He has amassed 6085 runs in all these matches with an average of 27.78 and a strike rate of 142.47. Roy has scored four T20 centuries along with 40 half-centuries.

In the IPL till date, Roy has scored a total of 179 runs in the eight matches that he has played. He has only one fifty-plus score, which is a worry for the teams. That too, when he played a superb knock of 91 for Delhi against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. That has been the highlight of his career in the Indian Premier League. Due to this, no franchise has been willing to spend money on him and add him to their ranks.

Roy will join his England teammate Jonny Bairstow. Both of them have been a very successful opening combination for England in the last few years. However, he will be a backup option at the start of the season with Jonny Bairstow and David Warner as the preferred choice.

The Franchises Will Surely Not Be Pleased With The Players Dropping Out Yet Again

The pandemic has been the main reason for a lot of players dropping out from the IPL last season. It seems that could be the case this term too. The number of cases in India have been going up. Due to this, there have been quite a few problems that are now starting to happen. A lot of ex-players, movie stars and even politicians have been impacted by the growing numbers.

This could mean that the BCCI will have to find a solution to the problem and react fast. They presented a successful IPL 2020 after the initial delay, which took place in the UAE. Despite that, the upcoming edition of the tournament is set to be played in India. It is expected that the games will be played behind closed doors. It means that the fans will have to watch the tournament from their homes, rather than be present at the stadium.

Not the best solution but it seems to be the only one. At present, there are a total of four venues that will be hosting the games. For now, there are no major changes to any of the players, it seems. Keeping that in mind, things could be updated in the next few days. Let’s see what the plan of the BCCI in this matter is and how they make things happen this time around, after a great tournament in 2020.
