Washington Sundar to miss remainder of IPL 2021 due to finger injury

Royal Challengers Bangalore all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the second leg of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a finger injury. The 21-year-old failed to recover from the finger injury he picked up in England while on tour with the Indian Test team. Bengal medium pacer Akash Deep, who is also a net bowler with the franchise, has been named as his replacement.
“Royal Challengers Bangalore’s all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remainder of the Vivo IPL 2021 due to an impending finger injury,” the IPL franchise said in a statement. Sundar has accumulated three wickets in six matches at an average of 32.11 in the first half of IPL 2021. This is the franchise’s fifth replacement of the season.
Meanwhile, Sundar’s replacement, the 24-year-old Deep was the second-highest wicket-taker for Bengal with seven scalps from five matches at an average of 19.28 in the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has taken 21 wickets at an average of 16.85 in 15 T20s. He has also been a regular for the state side across formats in the last two domestic seasons.
“The move reiterates the focus RCB has on grooming and nurturing young players as the team continues to develop exceptional talents and create a pathway for young talents to find their way into IPL and Indian Cricket,” the Royal Challengers’ management said in a statement. Royal Challengers Bangalore are currently third in the points table with 10 points under their belt from seven matches.
Earlier, RCB had signed Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga as Australian legspinner Adam Zampa’s replacement. Australia’s Tim David replaced New Zealand’s Finn Allen, while Australia fast bowlers Daniel Sams and Kane Richardson were replaced by Dushmantha Chameera and George Garton. After being postponed in May, the second leg of IPL 2021 is slated to commence on September 19 in the UAE.
