BCCI eyes extended window for IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) eyes an extended 10-week window for the succeeding editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to allow “top international players” to participate in the cash-rich tournament. “We are in discussions with the ICC and several other cricket boards to have an exclusive window for the IPL,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said. “Let me assure you that there will be a two-and-a-half-month window in the next ICC FTP (Future Tours Programme) calendar so that all top international players can participate.” The ICC is set to discuss the 2024-2031 FTP calendar next month.

Shah added: “Since this tournament benefits all, we have received a positive response from the ICC and other member boards.” Earlier this month, IPL media rights were sold for record-breaking Rs 48,390 crore, becoming the second most prestigious league in the world. In the last edition of the tournament, Lucknow Supergiants and eventual winners Gujarat Titans joined the expanded league.

This upcoming season, however, Shah ruled out the possibility of adding another franchise. “Expanding the IPL further will depend on many factors like expanding the talent pool with no compromise on quality of talent, strengthening grassroots, building the right infrastructure and many other factors,” he said. He also dismissed suggestions extending the IPL window would affect India’s international games.

“The BCCI remains committed to international cricket and it’s not just the marquee series like India v England or India v Australia,” he said. “We want to design a comprehensive calendar where we aim to help associate nations with consistent and regular bilateral tours.” The next edition of the IPL has been scheduled tentatively between 25 March 2023 to 28 May 2023.
